* * *

With a mouth full of grilled chicken breast,

Paxton looked over the table at Nicholas who was

only pushing his food back and forth on his plate.

“Hey, what’s going on in that head of yours?” he said

after washing his food down with a swig of imported

beer. “I went with Jodi to see her old group home this

morning.”

“Really?” Paxton wiped his mouth and tilted his

head with interest. “What was that about?”

Nicholas cleared his throat. “Not all together

sure.” He got up and cleared his plate, continuing

from the kitchen sink. “I think she needed to get some

things off her chest.”

“Hmm.” Paxton took another bite. “Wonder why

she asked you to go.”

“I was happy to go with her,” Nicholas said and

Paxton noticed how his eyes burned under the weight

of his words. There was more to it than just that.

“I’m glad,” he said, deciding he too wasn’t all that

interested in finishing off the last few bites of his

meal. “What did she want to talk about?”

Nicholas shook his head. “That was between us.

I’m not the kind of friend to go blabbing about private

conversations.” He smiled. “I will tell you that I

completely see why you love her.”

“Like a sister.”

“If you say so.”

“What does that mean?”

“Nothing more, nothing less, babe. You say you

love her like a sister.” He walked over and kissed him

on the mouth lightly grazing Paxton’s ruddy lips.

“But your eyes say you don’t even believe that.”

Paxton was confused. Was he picking a fight? It

had been ten years since she’d left him in Burlington.

Paxton wondered if that was long enough to convince

himself he never dreamed of her, awakening with a

weeping cock moistening his boxers. The dreams had

been most common after her e-mails stopped. He’d

avoided her as much, swearing not to complicate

things for her and Dan. Then he’d met Nicholas and it

was easier to feign amnesia. Still, why would

Nicholas ask him to admit his old feelings now? What

the hell good would that do?

Paxton deposited his plate in the sink. “I don’t

know what you’re talking about. Jodi is my friend,

that’s all.”

Nicholas tossed the dishrag on the counter and

turned on the dishwasher. “Forget it. I’m going to

take a shower.”

“I’ll be up soon. I brought home a movie.”

“Aliens and zombies I suppose.”

“What else is there?” Paxton grinned.

Nicholas rolled his eyes. “Bring it. We’ll watch it

in bed.”

By the time Paxton heard the door it was after

eleven. Keys dropped onto the hall table and the

closet door creaked. Paxton slid out of the bed

carefully and tried not wake Nicholas, who’d fallen

asleep a half an hour into the movie.

He waited for her at the top of the stairs, telling

himself he didn’t need to pull his sweat pants on over

his briefs since she’d already seen him in much less.

“Oh fuck! Paxton, you scared the crap out of me!”

Jodi whispered hard into the dark. Only the blue

wash of the television screen illuminated the hallway.

Paxton stood among the flashes of white and navy on

his bare chest.

“Sorry. I wanted to say good night.” He shook his

head at the way that sounded. When did he forget

how to talk to her?

“Oh,” she said simply.
